"Summer is young, energetic, and intellectually sophisticated. She is imbued with our host culture's love of the 'aina. She has the natural ability to draw our island youth into the democratic process. Summer is in tune with the national Democratic theme of emphasizing the likenesses that unite us all. These traits, plus her education and work experience have prepared Summer for bringing creative solutions to the challenges facing Maui Today."

-- Jim Crowe, Precinct President Kula

21st Century Democrats endorses candidates who have a passion for and commitment to progressive ideals. Once elected, these officials will uphold civil rights for all Americans, bring a responsible end to the war in Iraq, refocus the failed education policies of the Bush administration, and set aggressive standards to control climate change.

"Community advocate Summer Star received the blessing of the Sierra Club for the Maui Upcountry District 12 race over incumbent Kyle Yamashita.

Yamashita is known for using his Economic Development & Business Concerns Committee Chairmanship to stop good environmental legislation, including a bill to increase the convenience of the state container recycling law.

The best thing you can do for Hawaii's environment on September 20 is vote. Putting the right people in office is more than half the battle. The Sierra Club has worked hard to select the best applicants for the job. Please support these candidates in the upcoming elections.

During these changing, often maddening times, where raising costs of food and gasoline, and just about everything else, is paralleled only by our fears of will we make it, how, and who will guide us, show us the way to sustain life now, and for future generations.

I have known Summer Starr for only the past few years but my conversations with her, brief as they have been, have touched me deeply, impressing upon me her elegant wisdom of complex environmental issues, global human rights and moreover, her love of people.

Summer genuinely cares about the well being of others. And to me that is the essence of why everyone in the upcountry should cast their vote for her on September 20th. She is the voice of a new generation of "conscious caretakers," a voice that is not only needed at this critical time in human and Hawaiian history, but a crucial one.

Summer embodies the future of a living Hawai'i and Upcountry Maui. Her strength and dedication to common sense solutions for our community will provide us with access and voice to do what is necessary for Maui to survive as paradise. Summer gives us the opportunity to answer the question, "What do we do next, Upcountry?" The answer is...elect SUMMER STARR and protect our 'Aina now.

Having worked on key sustainability issues with Summer Starr I am confident in her ability as a leader. She has a youthful perspective and a sharp mind to work towards solutions. I have not met anyone as passionate and enthusiastic about representing her constituents as Summer. Being a young entrepreneur in the sustainability field I repeatedly hear the mantra, "the youth are our future". Now is the time to put the young leaders in power. Summer Starr has my vote.

I want Summer working for us on Maui to help create smart and sustainalbe ways to help our growing families have a high quality of life here at home.

Summer has our best interests at heart; creating long-lasting sustainable jobs, reducing energy independence, supporting our host culture, and preserving our island way of life. That is why I am supporting Summer Starr.

"I'm excited that Summer has decided to get involved at an early age right here at home. I think her knowledge of the political process here in Hawaii and her love of Maui will do us all a lot of good."

Having watched Summer grow up in our Olinda neighborhood.......always a ray of sunshine.....I'm not surprised to see a lovely, community minded woman evolve. I know she is completely committed to positive change and has the presence of mind to follow through. She is exactly what our state needs! Please vote for her on September 20th!

-- Susan Wachter

Summer Starr is smart and knows how to solve our high energy costs from her work with solar companies. Since she was born and raised on Maui, she understands our issues and will work hard for us.

I trust Summer's instincts and will be voting for her.

Since she was a child, Summer has cared deeply about the land and people of Maui. She has always demonstrated a passion for serving her community so her decision to run for office isn't entirely a surprise. She will serve Upcountry with commonsense and will listen to the needs of Maui's residents.

--Erin Fleming Starr

"Much like the District 8 race, this one pits youthful exuberance against longtime service. And much like Souki, incumbent Kyle Yamashita has made a number of decisions that seem at odds with the needs and desires of his constituents, including squashing SB 1789, a bill designed to protect community access stations like Akaku that got unanimous approval in the Senate and was widely popular on Maui. Also like Souki, Yamashita's spending report reveals most of his big campaign contributions come from outside his district. Starr is young, but we feel she has the qualities necessary to become an effective and dynamic public servant. Maui Time Weekly endorses Summer Starr"
